Stepping up the mast,and then problems...

We finally did it!
Attached the spreaders, started up and with motor headed in the direction of the marina where they step up the mast.
Started well, but then the prop did not seem to engage, so my friend, who is experienced and has a similar boat, managed to move with the hull against the wind, and so we go there.
The mast went up with no problems
We raised the boat out of the water to inspect the prop, but that seemed OK also
We checked the transmission oil, and that was like mud; the boat engages in reverse, but very little propulsion forward.
So we had to park right there till tomorrow
My friend is looking up on the Manual to see what the reason could be, it sounds like it wants to engage, but barely does it
Do you think the oil will have a bearing on this?
Any ideas?

I believe the engagement system in your gear set is a servo cone. The engagement dog is a sliding cone. Over time with normal wear, bad oil, bad adjustment of cable. You should be able to see this in your Seloc repair manual for Yanmar marine engines. You DON'T have the Seloc manual??? Get it. plain and simple. I have both factory and Seloc manuals and I turn to thr Seloc first. The factory manual by comparison is goobble de gook!.

From what Sam has written I would bet on a combination of too thick oil and cable adjustment. Could be tough getting that old oil out. Easy to check the cable. Just shift it with the lever at the transmission to make sure you are getting a full throw.

Dear Sam and Ed,
I left the boat at the marina where they stepped the mast last night to figure out what to do
The good news is that my friend who has helped me along phoned me and told me he solved the problem: I think it is exactly what you both have said in repply to my request: cable adjustment was exactly the problem, and the oil was flushed a couple of times; that was all that was needed, I may need another cable, but the engine purred like a Singer sowing machine, and I was able to bring it all the way to the my deck; along the way I also learned how to throw an anchor and how to retrieve same.
How the simple things in life are so rewarding! What was I doing all these years, lived in 3 continents but never sailed...and being portuguese by now I should have discovered some land.

Now it's time to finish the boat, ceilings all done in cedar, must tackle the "Head" issue

By the way Sam, I DO have the Seloc Manual on e-bay about a month ago
I have so far learned how to NOT position the air filter (mine was upside down), and how to change a fuel filter.
