Raising systm:Gin Pole; boom vang;baby stays
Mike, I have fabricated a mast raising system from Home depot items and some parts form West Marine boating store. You will need enough 1/2inch electrical conduit to reach from your mast step to your forestay chainplate to make a gin pole. Two eye bolts on one end of the gin pole. Top eyebolt is for your jib halyard, bottom eyebolt is for your boom vang to attach to (Snap shackle end of boom vang clips to your jib tack hole of chainplate or shackle). Other end of gin ple is a "Y" connector at 90degrees of the opposing eye bolt end- see photo. You will need to small baby stays at least five feet up the mast or there abouts. Two pad eyes on the deck of your cabin top for the baby stays, these need to be almost in line with your mast step bolt (they can be an inch or two forward of the mast bolt but not much!) Bolt your mast to the mast step, bolt on the gin pole to the mast step or base of mast. Gin pole is pointing nearly straight up with jib halyard attached to top of gin pole eyebolt, boom vang attached to bottom of gin pole eyebolt, other end of boom vang attached to forestay chainplate. Haul in boom vang- baby stays keep mast from moving too far to port or starboard. When gin pole is nearly on deck your mast is now in proiper place. Lock down boom vang and grab your forestay, put more downward pressure on gin pole to move mast forward gives more slack for forestay. Done. System can be used on trailer or on the water. I also have a quick flip shroud adjuster that extends my forestay attachment. This means that I don't have to release my back stay to make more slack for the forestay. After I pin my forestay I flip the shroud adjuster down and pin it hte saftey clip. I am now rigged after I stow away or reattach my boom vang to the boom. I single sail and have used this system for about eight or so years. It's roughly the same mast raising system that you can purchase form MacGregor or HavenCraft out of New England Ct. Hopefully I can post my photos on this website. If not please see the Trailer Sailor Website. www.trailersailor.com You can use the search engine to pull up mast raising. Today 07/05/02 the site appears to be down, but has never been down more than 24hrs that I know of for many years.
