stepping the mast on an H-240

Last month I read some replies on this Forum of people using a "beach towel" to help when stepping the mast. I cannot relocat those messages. Where was the towel used and why? Would it help to put a roller on the holding unit at the stern?

Crutch roller

I don't know about the beach towel - I didn't read that post, but perhaps it was to cushion the furler drum from scratching the windows as the mast came up? I use my hat.As far as the roller in the crutch, it is really just a section of PVC pipe which doesn't really roll. I just replaced that pipe, as have others, with a trailer roller. Mine was a 5" spool roller with a 5/8" ID; Shipshape P/N 29522.The PVC pipe was 5.75" so I used it to cut two 3/8" spacers to go on either side of the roller.

240 furler drum

When I undo the furler drum from the bow I loosey bungie cord the drum to the life line. So I am hands free when i drop the mast I and don't have to worry about it slidding anywhere and everywhere (which it use to do).

Many thanks. I'm on my way to the spool roller and will be sure the drum does not wonder. I think you must have guessed right on the beach towel location. I put 1 1/2" turnbuckle covers over the shroud turnbuckles which prevents them from flopping over and sticking in bad positions. Seems to work well.

Rigid Boom Vang

I believe the article was in reference to people who installed a Garhauer rigid boom vang. The piece added to the mast , to attach the vang to, was so low that it could touch the deck. One person replied that they wrapped it with a towel to keep from scratching the deck.

I did look at some vang article so that may be where I saw the reference to the towel - thanks. I just put on a Boomkicker which only has a small fitting that will be on the mast when I take it down so I do not think I will need a towel there. I could be useful as suggested on the furler drum.
