Stepping the mast Mariner 19

I just aquired this boat and am about to attempt to step the mast. I am retired and on my own and I think I can attach the shrouds set the mast in the step and pull it up from the bow. Can anyone tell me if this the proper procedure. My second choice is to make a hoist of some sort.

solo mast raising

check out the mast raising leash picture and description at this site http://groups.msn.com/RogerConrad/shoebox.msnw?Page=1 The picture is from my Daysailer II by O'Day. It's mast is actually 3 inches taller than the Mariner, and I raise it by myself, often with just one hand, (other hand on the jib halyard connected to the leash) and I am almost 50. The only minor problem I sometimes have is ensuring all lines, shrouds, turnbuckles don't snag on something as I do the initial lift. Check the rear mast support picture as well. It helps to have the mast in the right horizontal position before starting to raise it.

Your mast is 33" taller than mine, but I doubt this should be a problem. As I say, I do the initial lift with one hand, put it up on my shoulder, then walk forward lifting it as I go.

Mariner 19

I also just acquired an O'Day Mariner. Mine has a bolt on iron keel. I am looking for a pattern to construct the inside wooden framework to support the keel. Would you be interested in letting me look at your boat to take measurements, etc?Thanks.John
