My wife and I are thinking about purchasing a 1982 Hunter 22 and keeping it on a trailer. Can any 22 owners tell us how easily and quickly we can step the mast? (In your experience would we do better to keep the boat in a slip?) Thanks -- MW

Stepping Mast of Hunter 22

Thanks. I think you just sold us on the H22, with trailer. Your picture makes stepping the mast look easy. Would you be willing to share any more information about construction materials, dimensions, and methodology for the A-frame?

It is not hard but gets old soon...

We have a trailer sailboat; a Windstar 223 which we use once or twice a year for week long trips in different sailing venues (Long island Sound, Chesapeake Bay, The Outer Banks etc. Stepping the mast twice a year is not a problem. However it is not practical for a weekend trip or a day sail. On the weekends the ramps are congested with power boaters and set up areas may not be available. You also may be dependant on the tides to launch and retrieve the vessel. If you would like to sail frequently get a slip. If you are going to keep a boat in the water you need to pait the bottom includying keel or center board with anti-foul paint.

Keep it in the water

I have mine on the lake 15 minutes from home and go to the boat once or twice a week. If I had it on the trailer I might have time to set it up and use it twice a year. My wife didn't want a yard ornimant either. I use the trailer twice a year to take it to Pensacola for the BEER cruise and Family at Gulf Shores the week of July 4th. It's a grat boat. The extra head room makes it feel like a larger boat.
