I will be pulling my 1979 Cat. 27 in October for some much needed bottom work. While she is in the yard, I would like to step the mast to replace internal wiring, mast head and spreader lights and for general inspection. The Yard is charging $220 to drop the mast and $220 to lift it back into place. Being the frugal sailer, I thought I would give it a go myself. Is it possible to step a mast of this size without the use of a crane? If so, how?

Yes, it can be done.....

...by using a simple A-frame scaffold. I would suggest stepping and unstepping the mast alongside the dock while the boat is in the water. You'll see what I mean when you look at the pictures in the web article I want you to go to. In any regard $440 is WAY too much to pay especially when you're also hauling out ...find another boatyard. Anyway, to get a detailed explanation, complete with illustrations...Go to Bob Deurer's C27 modifications and upgrades page at: http://member.aol.com/bobdeurer/mod-.htm then scroll down to "Miscellaneous" and click item #4, "A-frame". Be sure to enjoy the many other features in Bob's site. Bob's site, along with other similar sites of interest to C27 owners, may also be found on the Catalina 27 Unofficial Website at: http://www.geocities.com/catalina+27/ (lots of good stuff there) Good luck on your projects.

Joe is right, and...

$440 is way too much to drop and raise a mast on a 27 foot boat. Most boat yards I've ever stayed at had a "free for our customers" hand cranked crane (jin pole). You can use an A frame, a nearby bridge, whatever. (I've seen stout trees and other boats used in times of emergency but don't recomment these methods). A mechanically inclined fellow with some practice and a jin pole can do it single handed. With wind, lack of experience, etc. I'd recommend 3 adults (1 on the jin pole, 1 on the mast, 1 to grab/tie/guide/whatever). We've always done it assembly line fashion, but maybe our yacht club is more "cooperative" than most. Each weekend in the Fall there is a list of boats done for the season and requesting haul out. Prepare -- while still at YOUR dock, remove the boom, secure all halyards, etc., remove any tape or safety wire, loosen lock nuts, etc. from turnbuckles and loosen the rig a *little* bit so that when the time comes you can hand loosen the stays and pull the pins. (You don't want to find out you've got something seized when your turn comes.) Process is the boats come to the pump out dock for their final pumping, move to the jin pole dock, drop the mast, move to the haulout well. While the travel lift carries your boat away, you help drop the mast on the boat behind you in the queue. Paying $220 for that is crazy.
