Jib Halyard

I would tie a long line to the jib halyard (make sure it is well cleated or tied off at mast end) and stand far forward of the bow using the line to assist pulling it up. Two others on deck should be able to muscle it up the rest of the way. Be sure the side stays are attached and tie them off to the lifelines to keep them vertical and avoid any kinks or hangups where they attach to teh deck. Push forward on mast & pull on jib halyard to get enough length to attach the forestay. Might have to slightly loosen backstay to get it attached. Good luck. P.S. Make sure the back of the trailer has a block under it to keep it from tipping backwards- I didn't do this once & it wasn't a fun ride!

what I do

Once the mast is pinned on the step it's not really going anywhere, so my wife disconnects the line used to pull on the forestay while I take the jib halyard and provide enough forward pull (read almost hanging on it) for her to pin the forestay. It works like a charm. With as many people as you have to help lift the mast, you shouldn't have any problem getting it up, then just use the halyard to get it far enough to pin the stay.

Main halyard hooked to jib halyard

Don't know if you saw this post from a couple of weeks ago: we use one person on the boat (with a stepping plank) and one out front pulling on a rope. Good luck.

Thanks - we're up!

We got it up but relied on the strength of one of the boys too much. He basically pressed it into position as we didn't do a good job on the winch to assist. The Jib halyard suggestion to give the forestay slack will help. Thanks for the replies. Mike M

So, today's the day. Putting up the pole for the first time (back yard test basis). Wife, sister and two very capable 18 year old boys will help. I've read every post on this subject in the archives. One question - The manual says to tie a line to the forestay, run it through a block back to a winch. But, some of the posts say it's pretty tough to get enough forward pull on the mast to get the forestay attached. Some posts indicated that they used the main or jib halyard instead of the forestay. Please give any thoughts you have on which halyard or stay to use and whether or not getting the forestay clipped on is an issue or not. Thanks in advance! MIke M
