While getting ready to back out of the slip Sunday morning, I noticed the wheel moved way to easy. I opened the stern locker and found the cables were off the pulley. I crawled into the stern quarterberth, removed the very small access panel, about 5" x 10" and found that one of the 2 cables that run up into the steering pedestal had dropped out. The loop was still on the end, not broken. Anyone have any suggestions? Is this a major project requiring a professional?

Have a question that's not answered here? Contact Edson Technical Service Q1: My Wheel Brake doesn't hold - what can I do? A1: Just like the brake pads on your car, the brake pads on your boats steering system wear down and eventually need to be replaced. Order Edson Part# 316-456 Wheel Brake Maintenance Kit for all of the parts you need to make your brake work like new again. Included are new pads, adhesive, required replacement parts, and compete relining and maintenance instructions. Wheel Brake Maintenance Kit - Order #316-456 Back to Top Q2: The snap ring that keeps my wheel from moving forward on the wheel shaft has broken - can I get a replacement? A2: Yes. Until recently, all Edson Pedestals were supplied with a single snap ring to hold the wheel from moving forward on the wheel shaft. Edson has changed this to a split ring with a washer. The split ring is put in the grove and the washer slides in between the wheel and the split ring. It is recommended that you keep at least one spare ring and washer in your onboard spares kit. Split Ring - Order t# 960-A-1870 Washer - Order #960-A-792 Back to Top Q3: Will the new Stainless Engine Control Handles fit my existing Edson Engine Controls? A3: Yes, order Part# 963SB-55 for throttle and Part# 963PT-55 for clutch. They are easily retrofitted to your existing Engine Control Shafts. Starboard Engine Control for Throttle - Order #963SB-55 Port Engine Control For Clutch - Order #963PT-55 Back to Top Q4: My throttle doesn't hold when I push it full forward - what can I do? A4: Some Engine have a very tight spring on the throttle lever. Depending on the Engine Control Model, you may be able to tighten the Throttle Friction Adjuster. Older controls may not have this adjuster, but a "horseshoe" cable-clamp can easily and inexpensively be clamped around the outer jacket of the engine control cable to add the proper cable resistance. Back to Top Q5: I need a new black plastic handle for the horizontal Shift Lever - are these available? A5: Yes - order Part# 960-A-597 Clutch Handle. Back to Top Q6: I'd like to add instruments to my pedestal - can I retrofit a taller stainless guard pipe in place of my shorter one? A6: Yes - Edson offers an assortment of guard pipes of various heights. For a complete selection, see you Edson Catalog or request your copy today. Back to Top Q7: Can I get replacement parts for my steering system? A7: Yes - all Steering System parts are available individually for replacement. See the appropriate page in your Edson Catalog for a drawing of most items. If you don't find the part you need, contact Edson Technical Service Back to Top Q8: How do I know if I have an Edson Wheel or Steering System? A8: All Edson pedestal have an Edson Serial Number in the pedestal head below the compass. All Edson wheels have "Edson" stamped into the end of the hub. Almost every part built by Edson has the Edson name cast or stamped into them. Look for the Edson name for authentic Edson Parts. Back to Top Q9: I have 'play' in my steering system - what can I do? Q11: What maintenance is required for proper steering system performance? Their Technical Support site also has links to good articles at http://www.edsonmarine.com/techsupport/techform.htm Even if you don't have an Edson system, based on what your problem is, I would say that the solution is generic enough the Edson links would apply. It's good that the problem happened at the dock rather than out on the water and in adverse conditions - which seems to be where problems usually happen (troble comes in bunches). Hope these links help you solve your problem.
