I have just had to replace a steering cable from the pedestal to the rudder twice (just starting second season). The first looked like the original (1986 boat). Now one year later i've got to do it again. This time the cable broke at the chain end. I keep the boat on a mooring and tie the wheel off to both stern cleats when not in use. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to prevent it from happening again? It's not a pleasant way to spend the afternoon. thanks, Dick

28.5 steering woes

I assume the replacement cable came from Edision, if so, I would check with them. They might be able to shed some light. I have my original and if fact just inspected it 2 weeks ago. When you replaced it again, you may want to remove the overhead access cover in the rear birth, 4 screws, and inspect the cable every week or so for signs of wear. I'm also on a mooring and use my brake to lock the steering. Maybe one of two pulley's is frozen and won't rotate causing abnormal wear? I'd be interested to know. Tom 87' 28.5
