Was doing boat yoga today and I looked at my steering quadrant, and it does not look good.

what do you all recommend I do before splashing ?
Is that rope or wire on the quadrant? Looks like rope…or your cables are pretty “fuzzy”.
Is the green stuff gunk, or is the metal corroded?

Not sure what to make of it to be honest, I’m going back to the boat to work on the holding tank, I need to replace all the hoses, the PO used the wrong hoses

I would clean it up and then look for any broken strands or obviously serious wear. It may look a lot worse than it actually is. If nothing a generous squirt of corrosion proofing and then go sailing. The stuff I use leaves a kind of waxy coating.

It may pay to determine if someone has used the wrong kind of cable e.g. aircraft cable.

If you don't have an emergency tiller that is something to consider.

As Johnb recommended, definitely need to be cleaned thoroughly to inspect the cable. If corrosion has penetrated the surface of the cable, replace it. The sheaves also need to be cleaned and lubricated. Preventive maintenance should be done every year by wiping the cables with fresh lubricant; if you catch a snag on the rag from a broken strand, time to replace the cables. Also lubricate the sheaves, chain (if present) and gear inside the steering pedestal.

The wire definitely should be replaced, I can't quite tell if the tiller arm is corroded too, I would talk to Ken or Reed at Edson.

What is the purpose of the horizontal bar with vertical pipe welded ? Is it to keep the rudder from swinging wildly if the cable snaps ?

I really don’t know yet, I still haven’t done boat yoga in that direction yet
