We purchased our 1998 C36 MKII several months ago. At that time, the surveyor wrote about the steering assembly: "Cable and sheaves aer dry and would benefit from being greased at contact points. Additionally the pivot pins for the idler sheaves should be greased or sprayed with a suitable lubricant." Can somebody explain to me exactly where these items are and how I can access them? Also, what sort of lubricant is best? I have some grease for lubricating winches. Is that appropriate? Something else? Thanks.

Go to the steering manufacturer's website

and learn about what these are, you need to get th specifics from the manufacturer, saves us all a lot of typing :) www.edsonmarine.com Good luck with your new boat. Also go to the C36 Association website, lots of information for you there. www.catalina36.org

Stu is right

Edsonmarine.com has some very nice diagrams and fact sheets explaining what all the components of your steering system are and how to maintain them. It's very straightforward. We lube our cables with 30 wt motor oil (per Edson) and lube the idler sheave pins (pulleys)with whatever oil we have around. Not at all difficult or time-consuming and Edson will make it all very clear. Best, Gary Kunkel

Your C-36 manual shows how to do the steering cable maintenance. It is not hard. You can got to most of the cables from aft cockpit lockers. You have to take the compass off to get to the cables at the top of the wheel. I use a while greese. Getting the compass off could be hard if it has never been done before. Stu is right about joining the C36 Association website at www.catalina36.org.
