Steering lock on helm

I have seen a video where the steering wheel is locked while a single hander can go forward yet keep the direction of the boat sort of straight. I don't mean a autopilot just a twist screw on the helm to lock the wheel in place for a few minutes. does anyone know what that is called so I can get one. Turning into the wind to drop sails is good but if gusts from multiple directions then gets me in trouble.

Here is what I found; it is called a steering brake. Can one of these be added to any pedestal?

If you have Edson steering, I suggest you contact them. See http://www.edsonmarine.com/.

But if you have Merriman steering, you would probably have to have a brake fabricated as they are no longer in business and parts are quite scarce. I have Merriman and a steering brake on my H28.5 and find it very useful when single-handling.

Wheel brake

If you do have or obtain one, I recommend that you never tighten it down all the way. Just use enough pressure to keep the wheel from moving, without cranking it down past the threshold of pain. It's easier on the wheel brake components.

Consider a couple of short lengths of line hitched to the wheel and led port and starboard to cleats.
