Not that hard !!
Although replacing a cable is a project, it is not really that big a deal. I am not sure sure what the other reader meant by removing the binnicle but there is no need to remove more than the compass and shifter section. I speak from experience because just yesterday I had the whole thing apart on my 28.5. Start by removing your compass and shifter/throttle lever section being very careful not drop parts inside the binnicle. Next, mark with white out or a paint pen or something one tooth on the sproket and the chain around it. This is so you get the chain back on the same place and the top of the wheel remains centered. Next remove the cable from the steering quadrant (there is an access panel above the quarter berth held on by four screws) and tie a piece of string(8-10 feet or so) to each end of the cable then the both ends of the string to each other to prevent accedntally pulling them up through the binncle. This also assures the new cable will follow the some route back through. Pull the cable off the sprocket and out the top of the binnicle. When you get the cable all the way the strings should follow. Take them off the cable and tie them to something or each other to keep them from falling down inside. Now you can take the cale and match it up or have a new cable made. When you are ready to reinstall the cable. tie the strings back the each end and pull them through. If you replace the chain, mark the new chain with in the same position asa the old chain by counting the links. Pull the cable down the binnacle matching up marks on the sproket and chain. Pull the chain using you strings, through the sheaves and to the quadrant and reaatach and adjust. Before re-assembling the compas etc, sight up through the pedistal to make sure the cables run fair and there is nothing rubbing. You can do this by lying on your back n the quarter berth and looking up.Sounds easy, huh?? You will have an easier time with this if you have a helper, good luck. Kenny Logsdon H28.5 "St. Somewhere"
