Steering cable replacement Hunter 28.5

Does wheel and binnacle have to be removed?
Appreciate some input on what is the easiest way. Not much room below.

No, removing the binnacle & wheel won't get you too far is you are looking to replace the cable that actually controls the rudder. You need to get into the cockpit locker and loosen the nuts on the cable on the quadrant. Access is not easy, but that is the only way to replace this cable. Find yourself a skinny helper with long arms! Good luck,

Cable Acccess on H28.5 (1986)

In the quarterberth remove the overhead panel held to the headliner with four screws. The underside of the binicale and a couple turning sheaves are above that and you have access aft to the rudder quadrant where the aft ends of the cable are attached. You can also remove the compass from the binnacle and access the chain over top of the sprocket. You can work on and remove the cable without taking apart or removing the two part rudder quadrant. Also be aware that the top section of the binnacle under the compass is Fiberglas, not metal and is likely not available anymore.
