Since my boat is a center cockpit, the steering cables have a bit more complexity than does an aft cockpit. They go through a plastic covered flexible metal conduit (sheath? tubing? not sure what to call it) that allows it to change direction without sheaves. Apparently the cable has corroded as well as the metal conduit, requiring replacement. The boatyard informed me of this (after 13 hours just to diagnose! :cussing:). Replacement parts are approx $800 ($400 each side), and they have to be shipped from England. Apparently, Hunter no longer uses this system.

Anyone know anything about this product or any other products that can effectively substitute?

Check the West Marine web site for steering cables. They also have a tech person you can talk to if you want.

Hi Dan, I've inspected and repaired parts of the steering system on our 1991 P42 and it is very strong and well built, IMHO. Hunter used heavy SS cable throughout with sheaves at critical turning points, such as where the cables drop down beneath the helm to quadrant level and head aft as well as the 90 degree turn on either side of the quadrant. The section of SS cable between these two points run through a flex steel conduit with plastic sheath. I find it hard to believe that the 420 is that much different and cable corrosion is the issue.

If it were my boat I would start with Hunter Marine Customer Service and talk to Don Martin about the problem and follow his advice. Perhaps your yard is well meaning, but to take that many hours to assess the problem seems excessive. The steering system on our boat is not that complex requiring basic tools for most all repairs. I've learned a great deal about all the systems on our boat by doing my own trouble shooting and repairs. That way I know the repairs were done to my standards.

Hi Dan, as a foot note, most if not all the parts for the P42 steering system were manufactured by Edson. Perhaps it would be worthwhile to contact them directly for further technical advice. They have always been very helpful to me in the past when doing steering system repairs.
