The cockpit plate where the steering cable sheave is mounted is soft when you step on it so I want to remove it and reinforce it. I would like some advise on how to remove it. There are two 10mm allen bolts exposed and I believe they hold to cable sheaves under the floor. Do I have to remove the entire steering pedestal in order to remove this part of the cockpit floor plate or will it slide out if I remove the two allen bolts and maybe the autopilot mounting plate? Thanks.

Lee,

The two allen bolts hold the cable sheaves. I looke at mine yesterday and I don't think you will have to remove the entire pedestal. You will have to remove the flip down seat and the small part of the decking it is attached to. It is easier to do the seat first and then the second piece. This will give you relatively good access to see the cable sheaves and the rest of the steering gear. There may be a detachable link on the chain connected to the calble inside the pedestal to give you some slack when you remove the cable sheaves. The cockpit drains through that area under the deck so have a good shop vac handy to clean out the gunk while you are in there.

Paul, Thanks for the reply. I removed the seat and the part of the decking you refer to. The allen bolts hold the sheaves to the floor deck.. so what is holding the remaining floor decking down? It looks like the bolts below the autopilot chain may have to be removed. The cause of the floor plate flexing is a cut of the plate rib they made during A/P installation...specifically the rod connecting the rudder position indicator to the sensor.
Also today I started working on installing a PSS dripless shaft seal. I removed the prop relatively easy, but could not pull the flange on the other end. Did the trick with the longer bolts and the spacer but no luck. Yes I removed the nut but cannot see if there is anything else in the flange preventing it from coming out. I will return on Wed to HHN with more tools and I hope I don't break anything.
Regards,
Lee

Lee,

Yes, two more bolts probably need to be removed. I looked at a photo from my project last winter and the two bolts from the mounting bracket for the AP looks like they need to come off as well. I removed the drive unit to fix the motor but did not have to removed the base. See the attached photo. I am still trying to figure out why the underside of the decking had to be cut during the your AP install?

Sounds like you have an ambitious work list planned for this winter. Sorry I can't give you any advice on the shaft flange. Have not had to tackle that project.

Paul,
These pics show why the plate was cut. It was for the AP rudder position sensor rod. There must be another way!

Lee,

Ouch. If the installer had used a drill for the corners rather than a saw, that crack may not have developed. My sensor arm was done differently. I believe it goes across the width but I don't have a pix with me.

How are you going to reinforce that area? You may be able to bond a small piece of very stiff material to the two available sides (lip and underside) of that piece of deck. Looks like you may be able to clamp in both directions w/o removing anything else.

Paul,
If there is another way to install the sensor without reducing the plate rib, I would be interested to see it. I can always patch the cut completely.

Lee,

I can take a picture of my installation if I get to the boat this weekend. That may give you an idea of other options.
