I need to replace the steering cable on my 26 Oday. The system is a Merriman push pull cable. Anyone have experience repacing this cable. I can't figure out how to get to the chain / cable connection

merriman cable replacement

I replaced one of these cables. You will need a very deep socket to get to the adjustment screws inside the pedestal. Procedure as follows: 1. remove compass 2. remove compass housing (4 screws) 3. remove wheel shaft by driving roll pin out and then pulling out shaft 4. remove nuts using the deep socket from the tension adjuster 5. I remember some bracket in the upper section that had to be removed also. (it was about 8 years ago) 6. Go under cockpit floor and pull assembly out of hole in floor...you might need to loosen a few clamps for the cable. 7. Remove cable from connection point 8. Remove cable from boat. to reassemble reverse the procedure. If you want my opinion I would just unblot the whole pedestal and throw it overboard. I absolutely hated this unit. The push pull cable had backlash in it and the connection device used to get caught up on something and jam the wheel up and in general I was notpleased for 10 years. Edson makes a nice pull - pull system but it is big $$$. good luck with your repair. dave
