my shifting cable broke from the steering wheel housing....how do I go about replacing the housing that holds the wheel,compass,controlls,etc.

I'm not sure you need to replace the whole pedestal because your shifting cable broke. You can just replace the cable. I just replaced my throttle and tranny cables with Morse control cables. If you think you need a replacement pedestal, there are two major suppliers that I'm aware of, Edson and Whitlock. But now your starting to talk about $$.

Service the steering column

You should be able to replace only the cable. "Boatowner's Mechanical & Electrical Manual" has a chapter on taking the steering column apart and servicing. This should offer some help in getting started.

Bart: Contact Edson. They are the mfg of the pedestals on the H'30 for your era. Should be able to guide you.
