Staysail topping lift?

How do you guys/gals secure your staysail boom? When I had my mast down I found remnants of a topping lift(pennant?). There was a small piece of wire hanging just below the staysail halyard sheave that might have been for that purpose. Now I use the staysail halyard shackled to the back of the boom to keep it off the deck. But when I want to move the halyard to the sail head I end up resting the boom on top of the open hatch. Must be a better way.

Short topping lift

Ed, I have a short topping lift (12" or so) attached to the front side of the mast that attaches to the staysail boom when the sail is in the lowered position. I will take a picture this weekend and post it here for you. Richard Rhapsodie 79 H37C

PO's idea works

Previous owner attached a short piece of line to the front of the mast (at the device which holds -- if you ever use it -- the spinnaker pole). About twelve inches long. Spliced a large ss carbiner to the bottom end so I have a ready-at-hand snap-on connection to the back of the staysail boom which holds everything in place. Once the sail is up and carries the weight, I unsnap it and attach the carbiner out of the way to the ring at the mast where it is handy when I am ready to take the sail down. That way nothing flaps around. Keeps the boom off the deck, and prevents the sail from blowing off centerline until you want it to do so. Works great.

Thanx guys.

There is nothing on my mast in that area except extra cleats. But they end up being covered over when I zip the mainsail cover. So I guess I will need to mount something higher up. I need a whisker pole ring but I think above the sail cover would be too high. Then again, given the height of the clew on the yankee, maybe not? I could use Warren's method since I do have a spinnaker halyard. Thanks again.

you saw mine in the pix

I have the roller furling staysail on a cdi i can release the halyard lower it and use it to top up the staysail boom

Thanks Richard.

That is probably what I will do but maybe above the the sailcover. I have cleats on the front of the mast and so many halyards and reefing lines that I don't think anything else will fit under the cover. Yesterday I did hook the spinnaker halyard on there and moved the staysail halyard to the front. I also noticed while sailing that a whisker pole ring would have to be above the sailcover. That yankee clew is way up there. I could also put the pole mount on a track if I weren't so cheap. :)

simple solution

Here's an easy solution for the staysail boom. Tie a small loop of line at the end of the boom and hook it onto the top of a cleat located on the front of the mast. The loop is the right length to keep the boom above the deck. When you hoist the staysail it usually pops the loop up off of the cleat. When you want to open the forward hatch I unhook the loop and move the boom to the side, out of the way.
