I am interested in hearing from anyone with experience with rigging stay and try sails on their smaller hunters. I expect to sail a great deal upon the Great Lakes and want to be prepared for inclement weather. Thanks.

Consider this instead

Get a new mainsail with 3 reefs, the last one a deep one. Setting a trysail requires unshipping the boom and it is only useful on a close reach to slightly below a beam reach. In addition, the trysail will need it's own track and new sheeting points on each side right aft. A staysail would also require structural mods, the strain on the tack is huge. You can't simply bolt a pad-eye on the deck. Then there is the stresss on the mast- adding a new stay and halyard would have to be positioned just right or else you could reverse bend the mast and collapse it. Then there is the issue of where to stow heavy storm sails on a small boat. A triple reefed main will give you 99% of the capabilities of a trysail/staysail at far reduced cost and no structural risk. IMHO if you want to be prepared for rough weather, rent a Sunfish or Zuma on a day when it is blowing 20 knots and learn to handle a small bouncy boat in tough conditions. Then you will be far more comfortable sailing through storms in a big boat, you will have more skill and added confidence. And it's fun. Fresh Breezes- Doug King
