State trailer law for hunter 260

After researching the web & speaking with a few local dealers I am still a bit confused about the trailer laws for the H260. Here in Washington the max. legal width is 8'-6", but in other states such as Oregon & Arizona it is 8'-0". Given the H260 beam of 8'-11.5" how are others dealing with this? Has anyone ever been pulled over or ticketed for this ? I heard from one dealer that you can obtain an oversized towing permit for $10 that is good for one week.Thanks,Greg

Search the archives for this topic. I've seen several exchanges on this subject. Most don't get the wide body permits. I don't remember reading that anyone has been ticketed.

Get a permit

Down here in Western Australia the law states that any load (including yachts of course) over 8' must have an oversize permit.In reality the chances of being pulled over by the police is very remote HOWEVER the fact remains that if we had an accident, wether it is was my fault or not, and I do not have a permit my insurance company will not cover us!The cost of a permit over here. $10.00 for 12 months. A small price to pay. By the way we also have to display oversize signs front and back as well as have a flashing amber light at all times while towing and further more we are not allowed to travel between sunset and sunrise.

Haven't had a problem yet

This question comes up frequently, and a search of the archives WILL give a slew of information. Based on my personal experience, and from what I've read/heard, it is not a problem.I have towed in the following states: IL, WI, IN, MI, KY, TN, OH, PA, and NJ, and have not had a problem. Occasionally, it might get a bit tight going through a toll plaza, but I have never been pulled over. My understanding, and from what I remember a patrol officer once posting on this site, is that generally the limits are enforced against commercial traffic, and they rarely look twice and recreational boaters. Does that mean that the police won't pull you over and pull out a tape measure? No. But I consider it unlikely enough, and have never heard of it happening yet. So I'm not going to sweat it.T J

Had no problem in WA

Hello there,Just bought and moved a Hunter 26 about 150 miles in Eastern WA and had no problems. I haven't heard of any problems in the WA/ID area with this boat. However if it only costs ten dollars, that may be the way to go for piece of mind. Also, if you do get an oversize permit, does that mean you have to use a pace car in front of the towing vehicle??
