Hello,

thanks for all the help on the stanchion question. I have another question.

Sometimes when i turn the ignition key and press the start button, nothing happens. I have to press the button 2 or 3 times before the engine starts up. I have changed the start button couple of times, does not seem to help. Read some articles on issues with solenoid. Has anyone seen this problem? I have a 1995 H 336 with Yanmar 3GM30F.

thx in advance.

Classic hunter starting problem. There are like 11-15 connections/quick connectors/terminals in this circuit. There are three solutions. Buy a solenoid to put on the solenoid and wire the starter control wire to that, just replace the entire wire omitting as many of the connectors as possible, or just remove the quick connectors on the motor. seems the connectors suck out about 0.2 volts per and with 11+ that is 2.2 volts lost in a best case scenario. Add some corrosion and ...... no start. The last solution has the added benefit of removing all the connector corrosion issues for the oil pressure, starter, water temp and idiot alarms as well. it is cheaper too.

Bill's right.

Connections, little OLD fuse holders, any time it's intermittent is is the wiring and/or connections. Look behind your cockpit panel, too.

Good luck.

Look Here

Look here in this forum search for starting problems and you should find info on what and how to add a selinoid to the starting system.

This may be waayy to sime but for a while I had left my battery selector on position 1. After using the boat on battery it struggled to get the starter going. At first I didn't know what the problem was but when I moved the selector to the "both" position it cranked like a charm. Just in case.

Relay

I concur with all responses. A fellow Hunter owner solved this problem by adding a $15 relay from Radio Shack at the engine wires of the starter. It effectively bypassed the starter button problem and also offers a clever opportunity to jump start when necessary. The upshot is no more starter problems. Check the HOW archives for the thread of discussion. How many annoying problems can you fix permanently for $15?

I added the $15 Radio Shack relay on my H376 as Deadline mentions about 5 yrs ago. No problems since. It's all in the archives.

As others have stated, you need an auxiliary relay. This will cure it

Question did you add the relay because of intermittent starting problems ? Was there a relay already on your starter or just a solenoid? We are having issues once in awhile with the engine starting and m trying to determine if adding a relay will fix it. H376 (1997)
