Hello all. I have a YSE 12 and when I turn on the key to start the engine, the little red light next to the ignition switch never comes on. Should it come on, or is it some other type of indicator light? In cold weather, the engine is very hard starting. Is there a glow plug like in auto deisels? If so, how do I know if it is working. In warm weather, it starts like a champ. Also, I'm still trying to get rid of the diesel smell whewww! thanks all Barry

cold starting yanmar

the yanmar is just a hard engine to start when cold, it has to do with the injectors and is a inherent design learn to live with it.There is not a glow plug on this engine and yes there should be a red light on with the key turned and the engine not running (check the bulbs) Hope this helps !

Starting

I have a YSE12, which I rebuilt 8 years ago. It is not hard to start, usually starting imediately when called upon. If it hasn't been started in 2-3 weeks if will be a little harder to start, but not what I would complain about. Anyway I don't think it's a "yanmar" problem. I would check your compression, have your injector checked for a proper pattern and pressure, and check your fuel.

Cold starting

The red light should come on. The bulb is probably burned out or a wire is loose. Fix it. Hard starting when an engine is cold is not uncommon. There are things to look for before becoming too concerned about compression, injector patterns or fuel pressures. The faster an engine cranks, the higher the absolute pressure of combustion. Make sure that all the things involved in getting the most RPM from the cranking motor are proper. The battery must be good, the cables must be properly sized with clean, tight connections, the oil must not be too sticky, the starter must be free to turn, the solenoid must pass all the current to the starter, etc. If all the "external" things are proper, then it's time to start looking inside. There is little sense in rebuilding an engine if all that is needed is a new starter bearing, or a lighter weight oil.
