I recently purchased a 28' Catalina that had a missing starter solenoid. Now that I have installed a new solenoid (and replaced a broken fuse on one of the solenoid wires), the starter engages when I turn on the Main battery switch on the electric panel. This happens without a key in the ignition or the stater button pressed? As you can probley tell from this message, I am a new to boating. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You may have already figured that you have a

wiring issue. If it was my boat, I would carefully trace, record and label the wires and find out what's going on. Sounds like the start button wiring got redirected to the battery switch, and is only or always on when DC power is available. Only YOU can do that. I would normally say "Good Luck" but this doesn't require luck, it requires hard work and patience and perseverance. It CAN be done, lord knows, we did. Many sources are available for wiring diagrams about 1. how the factory did it - not always right 2. how it could or should and can, perhaps, be done 3. how YOU want to make it work We'd be glad to share those sources, and some of our own sketches.

Additionally

the engine wiring harness article in the link shows you what color wires are assigned for the different functions, see the sketches "attached" to the text of the linked article
