I sail a Hunter 28.5 on Lake Travis near Austin Tx and sometimes when I push in on the starter switch, nothing happens. I usually just try again and then it starts. Once it engages, it never fails to turn over the engine. This seems to be happening more often lately. Doesn't seem to be a battery problem. Is this just a nuisance or am I on the way to a bigger problem? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Which was an excellent suggestion you might also look at the starter push button switch itself. Mine had become pretty yucky and I'd have intermittent problems with starting, no click, no spin, no nothing but lights dimming and instruments resetting. I got a new one and popped it in and all is well now. It really doesn't take much corrosion to affect high draw things like the starter.

clean up the contacts.
Mike & Rene: I'd start by removing the starter button and spraying with some electronic contact cleaner. Sounds like you may just have come oxidation on the contacts. You should be able to pick this stuff up any electronics store.

Beware ! of DW40
WD40 might have some uses but I'm not sure any more. When the propelent in this product flashes off, the oily product dries into a varnish like substance. Two bad examples, I lubbed the spedometer cable and gear of my motor cycle, it initially quieted down but a couple days later the nylon gear froze up then broke. I used it for a lub after cleaning my rifle, bad, it fouled the rifling with powder after the first shot and the trigger wouldn't set when cocked. Ther are much better lubs and cleaners.

Starter problems
There are a number of responses in the archives on this problem. I have it on my '87 28.5, but just keep pressing the starter button and it kicks off. I have assumed the switch is worn and may need replacement, but you will see from the archives that there are many suggestions.

Is there a solenoid?
I have the same problem at times and always wondered if there was a solenoid on the strater or if the push button was the main contact. If no one answers I will get in there and find out soon.

This issue has been posted previously and you should check the archives. In my case the button problem was solved by buying ($47) a new starting button. but it could be any one of the posting suggestions. Jim McCue
