Starter Problem??

The last few times I have started the engine it has not started on the first push of the starter button (ordinarily it does). When I press the button there is nothing. No click. No noise from the engine (that I can tell). Is this potentially a problem with the gear shift position? With a starter coil (if there is one)? With the starter button itself? If it matters I have a 13HP 2GMF Yanmar. Any ideas would be appreciated... Joe S/V Charis

starter button

there seams to be a problem with the starter buttons that Hunter is using. I have had the same problem as well as alot of others. Double check all the connectiins on the starter as well as the battery, but you most likely will need a new starter button. they are around twenty dollars and install easly by removing the panel. Good Luck,Hope it solves your problem.

Clean Connections?

Had that problem before. My battery connections needed to be wire brushed. Also do you know for sure your battery is good w/ a full charge? Other than that I have never had a problem w/ my '86 since bought back then.

Clean your connections first.

Joe: You can start these engines in gear if everything is OKAY. I would first check your connections at the starter. Just get a small wire brush and clean the cable connector and the lug on the starter. Then go to your grounds and the wire at the panel too. If these are all in good shape, you will probably need to replace the starter button in the panel. I have not had any problems but there are many who have had the exact same problem. This is a standard Yanmar part so it should be easy to get one from your local deal or maybe thru Diesel Direct.

Thanks to all...

Appreciate the responses. BTW my batteries are relatively new and I do have a smart marine charger to keep up the charge on the batteries, so I eliminated that as a possibility at the outset. I'll check all the connections and probably change the starter button anyway. I have a Yanmar parts dealer within a mile of the marina, so that won't be a problem... Thanks again, Joe S/V Charis

All connections

I had an intermittent problem. I finally cured it by cleaning the Perko Battery isolation switch connections.
