Most of the time when I attempt to start my Yanmar 2GM engine, nothing happens when I depress the starter button the first time. Then, after several attempts (could be the next attempt or the tenth), the starter kicks in and the engine starts as if nothing was amiss. The batteries are strong, connections tight and uncorroded. Any suggestions?

Lots of suggestions here. Suggest the archives

Do a search with 'relay' too. Again, lots of stuff.

I had that

It drove me nuts until I installed a starter button on its own parallel sub-circuit by the engine (wanted one there anyway.) It's totally reliable, and gave me the time to research the bad loop thru the original key and starter button and the many feet of wire involved. Turned out to be bad connections, though I thought I had checked them all before. I find on my 1983 H34 that 20 year old wiring can have bad connections even though they look tight and clean. FWIW
