I'm installing a new starter motor. When I removed the old one there was no shim or gasket but there appeared to be some kind of sealant around the interface between the starter and the flywheel housing. Might have been some kind of silicone (RTV?) or something. I've searched around the net and can't find any reference to a sealant there. Any suggestions or comments on what to use, if anything?

Thanks.

No sealant necessary there, Richard. That space is usually vented and should only have air in there..

You are welcome.. Be sure to clean all the old gooky stuff off the flange so that the new starter sits perfectly against the bell housing flange..
