Can my brothers suggest the best way of searching out a starter (new, used, rebuilt) for my 87 28.5? It has (I think, have to go to the boat today to be certain) a 2cyl YanMar. Are these available and what is the best way of locating them quickly?

I think your part number for the starter is: 128170 77010
There are some cheap Hitachi knock offs out there and I'd advise the buyer to beware.

Starter

I recently had to replace my starter on my 3YM30,by mistake a crew member
jammed the key and ruined the starter but any way no one had one in stock
and I was stuck out on a mooring a day of sailing from home but found a local starter rebuilder with brand new starters for my Yanmar at less than half the price from Yanmar which are built in Japan and mine came from China.
Yanmar wanted $350.00 and had to order it and this local guy had in stock for $139.00 total and so some times cheaper is good.
The rebuilder told me parts are really hard to get to rebuild these starters and one of these days I will see if my old yanmar can be rebuilt as a back up.

I agree with most of the responses, get a new starter and have the old one rebuilt as a spare. Also check with Yanmar, some of the smaller engines have a pin on the crankshaft and you can get a hand crank to manually start them. Yes, they do work, don't try using any type of crank that doesn't have a ratchet type gear or you will tear out your shoulder (or worse) once the engine starts...
