starter button and key

The starter button and key on my Cat30 are original (and therefore 17 years old), and whilst I have thoroughly cleaned them, they occasionally seem not to function properly (as in having to 'twiggle' the key to get contact, or having to push repeatedly very hard on the starter button to get it to start - even with a warm engine). I am considering replacing them, but wonder if these are and must be 'Catalina originals' or will just any starter button/key that I find at my local chandlery do the job? Shippng from the US is rather expensive for what essentially are pretty cheap parts. Any suggestions?

Had the same problem

with our 88 30. It was all in the starter button that ended up sticking partially on and burned up the starter motor and selenoid. I found the button at West Marine and replaced it myself - easy fix. If I'd done it when I first had problems it would have saved the other headaches.

Cheap Replacements

Edward. I had the same issue, so I simply replaced it. The panel comes off easily and the switch unit is held on only buy the nut on the face of the panel. Replace one wire at a time for a perfect match and it would be a good time to clean the ends or crimp on new connectors at this point. Ignition switch replacements are at every marine store. Simply, make a drawing of the number of connections in the rear of your existing switch and match that up with what is available at the store. I bought mine at West Marine and it was a perfect match. Has worked perfectly since installed last year. Bob Catalina 30 ('88)

thanks for the advice

this looks like good news and a relatively easy job that will not interfere too much with my planned Easter sailing.

mission accomplished...

did the job in just half an hour and it now works perfectly. Never knew a diesel started so easily! Shame I didn't do it sooner! Thanks again for the suggestions.
