If anyone has figured out the best place to buy Starboard products please reply. There are probably a lot of other uses for the stuff, and the commercial or industrial price is probably a lot better than the "marine" price. It may have another generic name. If there are any plastic experts out there, help us out.

Best thing to do is go to

their website kingstarboard.com click on the distributor list and contact them other than West. I purchased a whole 4x9 sheet for $300 from Laird Plastics versus almost $600 from West.

Starboard and similar products are available on eBay, both in large and small sizes.

HDPE

Star Board is a High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) product with UV stabilizers. Although several manufacturers offer generic HDPE products (like “Plastic Lumber”), there are slightly differing formulations, some of which may be less desirable for your particular application. HTH, Gord

I buy white cutting board from a restaurant supply store. Same stuff for half the price. Only comes in 1/2 inch thickness.

Cutting Boards ?

Kitchen Cutting Boards may be Low Density Polyethylene, or Polypropylene - and almost certainly wouldn't have UV stabilization. They may be suitable for your (limited) purposes, but they are NOT equal to Staboard !!! Gord

Was told same thing as Gord

is saying re UV effect on the "cutting" board product. I was discussing getting stern rail seat fabrication with the yard and said I would go with cutting board material for the seat bottom. The welder said starboard will not break down in the sun but the cutting board product would. Anyway, as for a source that will sell partial sheets or cut to order of sell from their remnants pile try Clear Cut Plastic in Seattle. Scott http://www.clearcutplastics.com/

Not all cutting boards are created equal

I cannot overemphasize the benefit of contacting the kingstarboard.co website. One of the distributors listed is Laird Plastics which has offices in the USA and Canada(see link for BC distributor). You will pay more in freight than the piece is worth if you purchase on ebay.

Never used cutting board...

but I made a stern rail seat out of kingstar board. It is nothing short of a delight to work with. It cuts on a bandsaw, the grooves file right out and it has been durable as heck. My wife had a plastic cutting board in the galley a few years ago and it warped, so I used a leftover piece to make her another one. Seems worth the price to me.

Thanks for the leads...

I'll check some of those suppliers. I'm also checking into some PlasTEAK. I've never used either product. Does anyone have an opinion on the strength of StarBoard for handrails, hatchboards, etc.

Starboard is not structural. In other words, don't

use it under a load that can bend it. It will yield and take a set. But it is so good, I'm swapping out most of my boat for it. :)

King Starboard

Fred's correct - even King admits it. From the King Starboard page http://www.kingstarboard.com/ “ The King StarBoard® Family of Marine Grade Polymers are strong, but they are not a structural material. When using these products, they must be supported by a load bearing framework.” Tensile Strength = 4,000 psi + Flexural Stiffness = 180,000 psi Tensile Impact Strength = 115 Lbs/Sq. In.
