we are evauating a 99 hunter 380 and during our walkthru inspection, we noticed a 4 in long crack in the main compartment directly where the starboard mainstay goes thru to the stainless connection on the deck. I am hesitant to spend more money and or time if this is to be considered a major issue to worry about. The kitchen window the long one, is leaking and has stained the blind. I am certain the leak can be fixed but perhaps not what caused it. we did inspect carefully the seal and there is a small break directly near the main stay connector. I took the original manufacturer cover off the chain plate Knee connection and it was what I consider cooroded from salt water. I took pics and hopefully can post.. unable to post yet in hotel computer...

Sounds like you're concerned about the chainplate for the starboard cap shroud. (stays are fore and aft, shrouds are athwartship.. side to side). The cap shroud is "mainstay". The shrouds, uppers, lowers, etc., attach to the chainplate that anchor the rigging to the vessel... so... it's SUPER important. What you really want to know is if the anchoring element, either a bulkhead or the hull itself....... is damaged by water intrusion. A condition that can lead to rig failure.
This is something a surveyor will consult you on. If the bulkhead is damaged or the deck area around the chainplate's covering seems suspicious,
make your offer contingent on the inspection and negotiate from there. The seller may offer to fix it... but the inspection contingency should stay anyway... to make sure it's done right.

Thx all. I will post the photos. I could not get verification as to the damage severity nor water intrusion. I cancelled the purchase. No survey performed.

Top picture looks like the hardware pulled through the deck. There is a ragged hole covered partly by a wood dick. Would be hard to sleep on that boat in a stiff breeze. I bet the other side looks different. Do a hull report equal to car fax ( not all issues show up but might tell you the rig failed.
