Standing room in cockpit

I currently have a Ranger 23 which has very little headroom under the boom. I do not need a large boat but I am looking for something which would allow me to stand in the cockpit under the boom, I am 5'8". Does anyone know of boats in the 25 foot range which would provide me with the needed headroom? Thanks Joe

C&C 24

Joe - I have an 83 C&C 24 - I'm 5'11 and can stand with an inch or so to spare in the cockpit w/o hitting the boom. This was an imporant consideration for me. The drawback is that when I go belowdeck - I can't stand straight. Compromises...

JOE...

I have a 2001 h260 advertised here that should suit you nicely, both in the cockpit AND in the cabin. My address is PJRLMR@JUNO.com. Paul

Joe There are a lot of Cal 25's out there, they have over 6 foot head room in the cockpit and a large one at that. See if you can get the pop-top model that will give you some extra room down below.

the trade-off is . . .

power and stability. My h23 boom barely clears my head when I am sitting (I'm 6'1") But having the boom that low lowers the center of effort, thereby increasing the stability of the boat. Further, it gives more sail area for the highth of the sail, therefore more power. Finally, I can stand and move around freely when I'm not tacking/gybing. Therefore the question, why are you so anxious to stand up in a 23' boat underway? Jim Kolstoe, h23 Kara's Boo

Look for a Cal 25....there are a bunch of them down in the Anapolis area.....They are great boats, very affordable and can sail with the best of them. Good luck!

Check an O'Day 25

My O'Day 25's boom does not extend very far into the cockpit (at least half the cockpit is a safe zone). If you can find one locally you should check one out. Also, I think if you're 5'8 you would find the headroom below quite comfortable.

raise the boom?

I have known of folks raising the gooseneck on the mast and having the sail cut down to fit. Obviously will reduce sail area, but if you don't race and only need a few inches, this is cheaper than buying a new boat.

agree with Bill

I sailed a Mirage 25 for about 10 years. A great boat with good head room under the boom. I wanted a little more clearance , as I was adding a bimini. I simply had about 1/2 foot cut off the bottom of the main. Since the sloop is driven by the gib, there was no drop in performance, from a cruisers point of view.
