Could enyone give me a guesstimate on what it would cost to replace my standing rigging on my Catalina 30 - turnbuckles and all. I got a quote for $1k and I have nothing to benchmark that off. All the rigging is off my mast so it does not seem like that big of a job to duplicate what I have in a shop. Thanks - Rob

do it yourself?

try www.riggingonly.com and after you go thru their web site call them and talk. i found them very knowladgeable and helpful. i changed all the rigging on my hunter 37 cutter by using sta-loc fittings on the bottom and swage on the top. the turnbuckles should be good unless they are gaulled so i didn't replace mine. i did it with the mast up and used a ATN TOPCLIMBER to do it, one at a time. did the entire job in one weekend. if your mast is down that makes the job a lot easier as you don't have to climb the mast 8 times. if i remember it was somewhere in the ballpark of $400-500 after all was said and done...oh one other thing, i was a 58 year old fat grey headed guy if that means anything when i did it 2 years ago..... good luck cp

A grand...

... for all the standing rigging on Cat 30, including end fittings and turnbuckles? Sign a contract with whoever gave you this quote quickly before he changes his mind. It's a bargain.

$1k a is a good deal

Off the top of my head, I come up with $1440 based on: 260 ft of wire @ $2/ft = $520 8 turnbuckles @ $50 = $400 20 end fittings (eyes, forks, rigging studs) @ $20 = $400 Labour to swag 20 fittings @ $6 = $120 I tend to round up to the closest $5 when I do an estimate so the detail quote will be lower rather than higher. Oh and that's $1440 Canadian :) The $1000 is very reasonable. It should include good quality wire and hardware, not the most expensive, but not junk either. You don't state where the boat is. Ask your local rigger if they use 316 or 304 wire. 316 has higher corrosion resistance for tropical use, but is 15% weaker than 304. (price should be about the same) If the C30 came with 304, you might want to consider changing the lowers from 3/16 to 7/32 diameter wire if you go with 316. IMO the lowers on the C30 are marginal at 3/16.

OK - thanks...sounds like a good deal then. I am bringing all the stuff to his shop so maybe that helps.

RAD, Sorry about the break in topic, when I was searching for my new boat, I read a thread of yours regarding a Pearson P36-2 Tri-cabin. Was ths boat located in Bayshore?

Hi NYSail This boat was and is still located in Glen Cove it belongs to a friend of mine. I was going to buy it but gave it a second thought due to the price he was asking. I love this boat its in great condition and sails well and has a keel centerboard that would do well on the Great South Bay so we'll wait and see if he lowers the price or see if something else comes along meanwhile I'll keep improving my 32 ODay Centercockpit.
