Standing Rig Tuning

Hi Group,

I am trying to tune my rig after putting up the mast. In looking back
through the discussions, some say tighten the rig loose, tighter if you
cruise or race. So, what is loose and what is tight? I have a "loos"
tension guage, but no idea what range I should be looking at. The Vega
manual says to tighten all the stays tight expept the lower rear
shrouds, which should be looser. Again, what is tight and what is
loose?

Hi,

I have read that it would be very difficult to tighten
the Rigging too much with hand tools, this I take as a
rule of thumb, I tighten it as hard as I can using
just my hand for the rear lower shrouds, then for the
other ones, do the same and then give it one or two
more twists using a pair of pliers.

However do use the most central halyard to ensure that
from one shroud to the other (the asymmetrical one) is
the same tension than the other.

Larry,
I came across a tunning guide (pdf file I think) put out by one of the spar manufacturers. In this, they go over tunning many types of rigs. It is put out by Selden Mast.

I went to the website and now I can't find it again. But if you want, I can forward a pdf copy to you as I did download it.

There is probably other info on the web too, but I haven't looked.

Also, the shaft collar I purchased was part no. 60485K61.

It's nylon. The smalles hole size on the nylon ones is .25 inches dia so that is why I put a small piece of rubber gasket in there. With that, it gets very tight.

I think the metal ones can come with smaller holes.
