Whatever's in the way needs to be removed

Hi Harold - Depending on your configuration, you likely will need to remove portions of the headliner &/or cabint trim to access the nuts on the bottom of those stanchion bolts. Boatbuilders usually leave them at least somewhat accessible, but it's not always easy. Sorry this isn't the most informative answer, but the bottom line is that there has to be a way to get to those nuts in order to remove the stanchions. Best of luck, Trevor

Hull liner

Harold - Here is the setup on my 1980 O28. Take a look at your hull liner (the carpet on the sides of the inside of the hull). It runs up the side and onto a lip on the bottom side of the headliner. Under each stancion, this lip is cut away to access the stancion base. You can feel these cutaways through the hull liner as you run your hand along this lip. You will have to peel back the top edge of the hull liner to access these openings. When you're done, a bit of carefully applied contact cement should close the opening again. This works for most of the stancions, but the aft port stancions are accessed inside the sail locker. Best of luck, Bob s/v Simple Dreams Chicago
