I was just curious as to how other people maintain their stanchions. I clean mine with brasso or some other type of polish. Once the small spots of rust are gone and they begin to shine up I then put a coat of wax on them to preserve them. The only problem is this doesn't last long and then the rust shows up again. Any thoughts on what works to keep those little spots of rust away.

My guess is...

... your stanchions are 15+yrs old. Hard to avoid getting some surface rust on stanchions as they age (pulpit, too). I think Brasso may be a bit too abrasive and, while it really cleans, may clean too much and may be contributing to your problem. I use McQuire's Metal Polish and also wax afterward, like you do. I find I can do the whole boat in less than a half hour and so have made peace with this being a chore I have do every few months.

Try Barkeepers Helper

I use Barkeepers Helper on my stainless. It gets all the rust off and protects it as well. Also works for getting stains off gelcoat especially exhaust and ICW mustache. Best part cost like $2 and you can get it at the grocery store. It is oxilidic acid so wear gloves because I hear it goes through your skin and reforms into crystals in your liver. Works well for cleaning other things too. Looks like Ajax and usually found in that section of the store.

is non toxic, safe to use and very effective. It is a better alternative to oxalic acid. It is a cotton batting with an impregnated cleaner.
