Stanchion smashed

While docking in a wicked current of the York River at Yorktown, I smashed sideways into the bow of a Coast Guard cutter (!) and knocked out a stanchion. Does anyone know where to get the standard Hunter version for boats 28-33 feet? West Marine's is inferior. Thanks.

Have it repaired. I did that at a good yard in the Bay area. It was cheaper, stronger and fitted right back on. After 5 years it is still cosmetically perfect.

My marina launch bumped one of my stanchions a couple years ago and I was able to straighten it in a vise with a wrench and some rags around the stanchion. The key to being successful is if the stanchion is not bent so badly that the tube is out of round.

BTW, did the coasties cite you for any gov'mnt property damage or operating at ramming speed in adverse river current? :D

I agree with johnb about trying to get it repaired. A few years ago I was dumb enough to leave the lifelines up an put a large tarp over everything and DOWN THE SIDES OF THE STANTIONS & LIFELINES (won't do that again). The high winter wind load bent 5 of the 6 stantions and tore the tube in one of the bent ones. I went to a local metal working and welding shop that also did stainless steel work. They straightened out the four that were just bent (used the one unbent one as a sample) and on the torn one, they ground the area, welded it, ground it again, and buffed it. You are hard pressed to spot the repaired one. Total cost was only $80. I then just rebedded each and rebolted them down. They have been fine since.

Stanchion dude

Thanks for all the advice. Will pursue vigorously.

I was coming into a T-head and misread the wicked current, sideslipping right into the dock and then turning so as to T-bone the hull of the cutter. Five guys in training "observed" before they managed to fend me off with the help of the older and experienced dockmaster. Two hours later they caught up to me an boarded the boat to take the info and review my papers. No harm, except to the stanchion.
