I was just wondering if anybody knows of a good way to polish the stainless steel stanchion pole mounting plates. I was thinking of a round drill attached soft wire brush with some paste polish…..i noticed mine were looking a little dull.

DO NOT USE A WIRE BRUSH EVER.... unless its a STAINLESS STEEL wire brush... a stainless wire brush used with some good mag wheel cleaner may help a little...
there is no good way to polish it properly when its attached. due to the bolts because you can only get random accessibility to it to get a good, even shine..... if its dull and you want to brighten it you can use 1000 grit wet sand paper with water and just a drop of dawn dishwashing detergent to help cut the grime... it helps by keeping the paper from clogging.
it WILL give it a slight brushed finish, but it will brighten it a lot without ruining the finish..... and if you should ever take the hardware off of the boat where you have better access to it, it will re-polish to a high luster very easily and quickly.

Bar Keeper's Friend is a useful polishing product for stainless steel and fiberglass. I use a cloth or a nylon scrubby pad gently on the fiberglass and use that more vigorously on the stainless steel. It requires a good long rinse with clean water to clear the residue. Hose and wiping work well.

Getting to the base and bolt area might be done with a nylon brush and the Bar Keeper's Friend.

I have bought the product at Lowes, but I have also seen it at some grocery stores.

BKF is sold as "Zud" in these parts. I understand it eats caulking, so rinse rinse rinse.
And it's great for stainless sinks, too.

3M makes an inert paste for polishing stainless. It has a grit in it and a wax component you just rub it with a rag. You need to be careful you don't upset the passivation of the stainless, that is why the suggestion not to ever use a wire wheel.

What you want is Spotless Stainless.... It will actually re-passivate the SS and limit future rusting.

Or any product containing an acid other than nitric or citric acid....

You need a product called Prism Polish. It is sold at the boat shows. Good stuff, you can get it on line.

Ditto to Main's suggestion to use Spotless Stainless.
Cleaned up several of my stainless parts with no scrubbing.
