This has to be in the archives, but I can't find it.
How do you remove the rust on stainless part such as transom rails and bow pulpits? Dothey have to be polished down with a high speed polishing wheel?

Get some crome polish from an auto parts store.

The stuff I used to use was called semi-chome polish. You can also buff it with bronze wool. Don't use steel wool on surfaces, wood or metal, in a marine enviorment as small particles from steel wool tend to get embedded into the surface causing rust speckles.

method?

Did you use a 3M green pad or bronze wool with the semi-chrome cleaner? OR did you just have to use a rag?

Marine stainless

The best, most long-lasting way to clean and protect stainless steel on deck is with a product that etches and passivates the stainless. Wichinox, from Wichard is one such product.

It cleans the stainless with a mild acid - I think it may be phosphoric. It is applied, left for 30 minutes or so, and then flushed off with lots of fresh water. It leaves a hard, clear passivation layer of oxide on the steel that protects it from further corrosion. It lasts about a year, in our experience.

It leaves it looking bright!

If you want to polish the stainless, do it first. Any polishing after the treatment will remove the passivation layer.

Wichinox is available from Defender.

Rust

I went down to my boat today to pull the engine, there is a lot of stainless on deck! I like the idea of the Wichinox. I will give that a try. The other suggestions are great too. I was going to polish it all with a drill and a buffer pad, but I have so much to do before I can even sial the ole girl I need to move along with something quick, for now. Thanks for all the info.
