Our new 310 has a stainless arch. We think it looks very nice indeed! It seems to provide all the functionality of the frp arch without looking so much like a handle. However, it could still be mistaken for a roll bar. :) We mainly just hope that Hunter will stick with the arch, in general, because it is a functional improvement to the boat's overall design, and not just some style item which the design team can add or subtract every few years to change the looks of the new models.

Utilization of an arch depends on where it is located. We love the frp arch on our 430. All of our major instruments are nicely housed within the arch, as are the speakers and lights. The major difference between the 430 and others however, is that our arch is in the FRONT of the cockpit, and therefore everything is in front of the captain when sailing. Wouldn't trade ours for a ss. As I said, "It depends!!!" Pete Burger

Can they make one for my 26

Dave sent me pictures of the 290. In the less than 30 fooy category, it has one of the nicest interior layouts I've ever seen. I have a 26 with the U-shaped dinette, and one of the reasons I never pursued a 280 is that it was too close to the 26. I have too pre-teen children who are not of the same sex, so the girl wants privacy and the boy wants his own bunk. Now if Hunter would just make a boat with two quarter berths so I could seperate them...... The teak looks great, especially the eybrow strip. It makes the cabin look lower, and the boat look longer. Ilike the stainless arch better. The round tubes make better hand holds, they don't restrict the view as much and you could use rail mounts to attach variou items if you needed to. What I want to know is do they plan on putting the SS arch on the 260 and could I backfit it to my 26? What about it Jim? Mike Pajewski H26 "Loon"

Teak vs SS handrails

The teak hand rails and eyebrows are standard through out the line for M.Y. 2000 though...SS handrails are an available no cost option. It is possible to upgrade some of the FRP arch models to SS arch..every thing has it's price you have to patch the old arch's footprint and in some models a tooling change was made to fit the SS arch. A lot of details but for the price of the arch in SS...??? and some fiberglass labor it can be done. We have no plans to put an arch on the 260 but that is something that could be done in SS or Al. by a local machine shop. JB

I love the arch on my boat! I can climb on it, shackle myself to it. I like the way it looks. The traveler works well. I prefer it to the fiberglass ones.

I just asked if you like the SS or FRP arch, that's all. I go away for a nice week of sailing and come back to see this thread going on. I agree that it would be ez'er to mount something to a SS arch and as for my FRP holding up after a few years? I am very sure that it will!!! I took a buddy from our marina out sailng today, this guy from day one just (DID) not like any kind of arch on any sailboat. As we hit 7.4 in 12.5 kts. of wind and have played with the travler on top of the arch. He made comments about how nice it is to have the travler lines right by the helm and how nice it was not to have to worry about the boom hitting you in the head. He then stated that " The arch is really nice" and that he now see why I like the arch so much!!! Ok, personaly, my wife and I love our FRP arch and would never trade... Steve, s/v Obsession...

One couple's opinion

My wife and I just bought a 1999 380, largely in part because the 2000 340 that we drove to Newport Beach to purchase had a steel arch. We cringed when we saw it, and ran to find a comparable boat with the fiberglass arch, finally winding up with the 380. Now before anyone torches me, I want to make it clear that this is only our opinion. I have looked at several boats with the SS arch and can't convince myself I like the look. Being ex-power boaters (please, no jokes), we loved the look of the fiberglass arches on the Hunters, and I agree that by putting the traveller there, it's less likely that sailing novices will receive swimming lessons (or concussions). There are those that dislike (to put it mildly) the arches entirely, but that's probably why there are more than a few brands of sailboats available to the public. Anyway, we can't wait to pick up our new "baby" and get sailing.

Arch Envy

As a new Hunter 430 owner, the arch was one of the attractions to buying the boat! As mentioned earlier, the arch is in front of the helmsman on the 430 and all the instruments are easily mounted there. As for looking like a rollbar? Not a chance, looks like a great feature on the boat to me and adds to the great looks of the boat! Haven't seen the stainless steel arch yet, so no opinion there. Any pix on the web?

UGH!

I have an H45, with no arch, thank god. Those things make the new Hunters look like....well....powerboats. Not to mention the excessive freeboard. I guess if I had to pick, I'd pick the SS arch because it isn't as obtrusive, and it's probably a lot easier to remove, which seems like a really good idea.. MC
