Has anyone been successful in staining a white sail a dark color, like tanbark? If so, how is it done and who might do such a job? Thanks for any info on this topic. Allan Gibson Nanaimo, BC Canada

Coloring Sails

Alan, Due to the resins in dacron sailcloth it does not take dye or stain very well. We use inks such as silkscreen ink to put graphics on sails but to do a whole sail that way would be a huge job. Probably more cost effective to go with a new tanbark sail. Thanks, Bill Colombo Doyle Sailmakers

On an older sail you might think about ...

carpet dye. some of those are good enough to color carpet with stain guard on them. And of course rust color seems to stay on a sail pretty well. Vic "Seven"

If they are dirty, or even if they aren't,

you might send them to SailCare to have them dry cleaned, removing the resin, then sent back to you for staining, then back to SC for re-resining, which they do as part of the standard cleaning process anyway. Buy some UPS stock first.
