Hi all,

I hope everyone has been enjoying this sailing season?

I was working with "stuff" and accidentally got some of it on my fiberglass in the cockpit area. I made the mistake of trying to remove it before it set-up and only made it worse. I now have several large yellowish stains and have tried everything from soaps to fiberglass cleaners,to solvents....even acetone with no success. I don't want to try abrasives or scraping for fear of making matters even more terrible.

Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with this problem?

What is "stuff" - if it's yellow and was liquid it could be, wait, wait...

C'mon, you really expect help if you can't or won't tell us what it was?

Perhaps you might also remove your duplicate post.

I think he is probably talking about GREAT STUFF! And rots of ruck (as jethro bodine says when quoting the Chinese) in getting it off if you smeared it before it dried.

"On/Off" should work, DO NOT LET THE ON/OFF TOUCH ANY PART OF YOU OR ANYTHING ON YOUR BOAT OTHER THAN FIBERGLASS. It is an acid and will destroy metal, plastic, your skin, your lungs... If you use it, make sure to wear a resperator mask with an acid cartridge. If the "stuff" is the expandable foam "Great Stuff" then acetone should do the trick, wait until it drys and then wipe it away - I use acetone to clean out the spray nozzle after use and it works great. Good luck.

Oh yeah?

This Great Stuff doesn't sound so great. :cussing:

What's it "supposed" to do?

"Great Stuff" is expandable foam in a spray can, used for filling holes or anywhere else you cannot get to but want to fill with something. I've used it to fill mouse holes, add floatation to seat compartments in boats, and fill gaps to give me something that fiberglass can lay over.

if it happens to be GREAT STUFF you can get it up with WD 40 before it sets up ....as it is a uritaine based product...if is set up then as Jimmy Buffet says ...."Only Time Will Tell" it will ware off over time if you keep working at it a little at a time

Re: Oh yeah?

Gee Stu,

Everyone seems to know what "stuff" is.

FYI,

It's an expanding foam insulation in an aerosol type can. It is extremely adhesive and has the ability to expand exponentially to fill voids. Unfortunately, it is extremely sticky and messy until it sets up and becomes a hardened dry and porous material.

As I mentioned, my only mistake was allowing it to drip where I didn't want it and didn't have the sense to let it set up and dry before attempting to clean it up.

Ahoy Rpell46,

Ajax not comet, and if that doesn't work On-Off Hull and Bottom Cleaner will. On-Off has oxicillic acid in it, will not harm fiberglass. If you decide to buy the On-Off Hull and Bottom Cleaner buy the liquid not the gel. It's not cheap, about $16 per quart. If that doesn't it's possible paint thinner, or gasolene might work! Something will eventually work! Good luck!

David
Thanks. I haven't tried Ajax OR On-and-off, yet......but I certainly will. I was able to "chip-off" about 30 % of it so far. So, maybe your suggestion will take care of the rest?

Thanks again...

Thanks for the suggestion. It seems a couple of guys suggested On-and-off and I am going to give it a try.

I did try acetone....with no success at all.

try a product sold in hardware stores called 'goo gone' and if that don't work there is a product called 'bowl clean' from janitorial supply stores

David,
Wood bleach is oxalic acid in a crystal form. It's activated by mixing with warm water and a small plastic tub cost less than $10 and makes gallons of liquid.
