Stability Index Rating

Can anyone tell me what the "Stability Index Rating" is for the
Vega? I am making plans now to take the Casual Observer to Bermuda
in May of 2004.

errrr ummmmm I dont know what everyone is talking about. I only know
that i love my Vega, feel safe in the biggest seas and strongest winds and
I know she will take a lot more than ever I will..... Just buy your Vega
nd go sailing, you will not be disappointed I promise you.

Kind Regards

"Stability Index Rating" ?? If you mean the Capsize screening value (2.00 or less required for offshore racing) then it is 1.84

David,
Not sure if this is what you want, but if you check out Ted Brewer Yacht Design, this gives a formula for calculating Capsize Screening Formula (CSF). For the Vega, this is about 1.9. The site says anything under 2 is good.

BTW, I have the book "Twenty Small Sailboats to Take You Anywhere" by John Vigor. He has a "Safety at Sea" facter that rates the 20 boats relative to each other and the Vega is rated 6 out of 20 (with 1 being the safest). I also have Practical Sailor's "Practical Boat Buying", 5th edition, that has a few pages reviewing the Vega. If you want to borrow any of these, let me know.

David,
Or perhaps your question was about the range of stability? Here is a link I found that discusses this.

It gives a formula to estimate this, but it's too late at night (and my brain is too fuzzy) to attempt to work this one out. Maybe later.

Here we go now, hold on tight. (Reference http://www.radford-
yacht.com/stablty1.html)

Most of these numbers come from the specifications given for the Vega
from the John Vigor book.
Beam=8 ft=2.4384 meters
Displacement=5070 pounds = 2.2434 cubic meters
Ballast Ratio = 2017 pounds / 5070 pounds = 0.3978

The hard part is figuring out the DCB value. I used the hull
drawings from The Vega Handbook, to try and estimate this. I
estimated the scale of the drawing to be 1:52. So I measured, from
centerline, 1/8 of the beam, or 1 ft (0.3048 m), which scaled down is
0.23 inches (0.586 cm). I measured the draft of the canoe body to be
3/16 inch (0.476 cm), which scaled up is 9.75 inch (0.24765 m).

So using DCB = 0.24765 m, gives SV=46.1 and Estimated Range = 121
degrees.

Does anyone have better values to use? Or a better answer?

Steve,
Well of course personal preference and previous boat experience have the last word, in what feels safe to you and what you are comfortable with. I know some people who wouldn't go to sea unless they had a minumum of 45 feet of hull under them. Then there's those who row across the Atlantic. After reading all the positive reviews in print and from all the records of crossings this boat has, I feel confident that the Vega will not disappoint. I am very excited about taking ownership of SV 265.

However, you have to realize that, being an engineer and all around computer geek, there is nothing else for us, who are socially inept, to do on a Holiday except for play with formula's and numbers :) . Plus this gives my arms a chance to recovery before another round of waxing on my ComPac.

So what is with the capital letters in VEga. At first I thought it might be a typo, but you seem to use this quite a bit. Just curious if there was a story involved.

Hi Steve;
I'm the happy owner of V-257; I own her over 26 years, and she has over
40.000 miles
under her keel. Many times I had a chance to buy another boat, but I'm
very happy
to say I never did. I have been through very rough weather, partly in
the Great Lakes,
partly in Southern Florida; she never let me down. I sail mostly
single- handed, and I feel
always safe.
Good luck with your V-265.......... Wilhelm

The capital letters refer to VEGAtarians, a name I coined last year to
describe the Vega owners who came to the West Coast Rendezvous.
Incidentally, not everyone is connected via e-mail. I hope a newsletter will
come out to inform all e-mail deficient VEGAtarians about the rendezvous in
August. Are you out there Gene, Peter, Sheila and all those other Canadian
Vega owners.
See you all soon.

yo Brian!

Did you miss the last "Fair Winds"? Rendezvous 2002 was announced in the Nav Station section of No.7. Issue No. 8 is a just few lines from being ready for the printer and the details of Rendezvous 2002 will again be there. Laura and I have already made our reservations at the Lopez Islander. See you there!

Aloha,
