Johnson Sails, St. Petersburg, FL, is about to replace the standing rigging on my '77 H30.I like the ability to inspect and clean the fitting, plus the ability to repair.I requested Sta-lock top and bottom. They recommended using swaged fitting on top, as you don't have a problem with water entry.Pete Albright,s/v Nancy Ross
Bob: I was given a sta-lok fitting to replace the top headstay terminal after cutting it off to install my headstay furler (Schafer). Other than being somewhat bulkier than the original swaged fitting I found it to be quite a positive connection. As an alternative to a professionally swaged terminal it does a good job and I don't worry too much about it letting go. I think I'd opt for a swaged connection if it were convenient, however.I did have one slight problem in attempting my first connection. The tapered insert that you have to place inside the wire strands was at least one size too large for the fitting. This in a factory-sealed package. Rigging Only, whom I had purchased the furler from, provided the right insert and it fit together nicely.
I had a stay-lock put on my forstay after we nicked it while replacing the furler (long story). Everything I read and heard at the time indicated that stay-locks (if installed properly) are good strong fittings and probably stronger than swages. So far no rigging failures.
