Bill, How hope you can help!! I purchased a brand new Hunter 340 delivered June 2000 from Sandy Hook Yacht sales. The Knot part of the Gauge work's fine, however, the wind angle part of the gauge has never worked properly. Sandy hook sent back the head last year(Nov 2000) and you replaced with the latest software version. This did not solve the problem. Sandy Hook this year has also gone to the top of the mast(56ft tall) and added the spacer to straighten out the windvane transducer and SUPPOSABLY also checked the grub screw for tightness. STILL NOT WORKING!!!! The problem is the wind angle is correct for a short period of time, then goes out from 60 to 125 degrees out. The wind angle after linearized per your instruction's work's for a short period of time then goes out again. Please help me, I've paid $1500 for this Unit and my boat is now 1 1/2 season's old and the problem still is not solved. Sandy Hook's service MGR Ed told me he is coming back(2 month's ago), however I think if he had all new part's he could solve the problem in one day's time as opposed to 1 1/2 time. Greg @ Hunter is aware of this problem. I also would like to add that 2 of my friends have this same gauges on their brand new Hunter's and they work fine, so I know it's not user error!

Wind Direction

Bill, I hate to just echo the same problem that Tom H. wrote, but it's happened to me on the ST50 on my 96 c28 and ST60 on my 99 c320. The ST50 was ok for the first year. In a total of 2 years I have not had accurate readings for more than a month at a time on the ST60. The ST60 had the wandering problem from day 1. The dealers people went up the mast and tightened a set screw and that fixed it for a while, but now it's back to wandering - especially in high winds. Stan "Christy Leigh" c320 #656

Wind Offset calibration

There are two potential issues I am aware of. I realize that you have ST60 Instruments, but one issue was in regard to Mr. Rogacevicz's ST50 instrument in the other reply to this forum. There was an issue at one time with the ST50 instruments "loosing their offset" when transmitting on a VHF. Please confirm that this is not occurring when you transmit on the VHF. The needle might jump, but make sure it goes back to its proper location when you release the PTT key on the VHF. You both referred to the grub screw on your masthead unit being loose. If tightening this temporarily fixed your problem, then you are probably continuing to loose the offset because of this screw slipping on the vane shaft. Our service center can do a modification that should take care of this. The modification incorporates a “D” profile added to the vane and pod shaft. This has been implemented to eliminate slipping vanes and the associated perceived visible problem of lost wind direction offset on the Wind Instrument.

Knot / Wind Problem

We had the same problem with our ST60 out of the box. Knotmeter worked correctly and the wind direction indicator just kinda wandered all over the place, and then once in awhile it would be accurate. Usually the accurate readings occurred in winds over 20 knots. We tried replacing it a component at a time, first the indicator, then the mast unit. Neither worked. We finally replaced both at the same time and it has worked correctly since. Go figure! Our equipment supplier was spot on with helping us resolve any problem with have had. Dan Jonas (S/V Feije)

tilted wind vane on B331

I have had trouble with my new ST60 as well but it appears to be as a result of the wind vane having shifted of vertical - as a result I get different readings on opposite tacks and variation according to heel. I noted the mast head unit was tilted when observing it thru binoculars while standing on the dock. I have not yet mustered the nerve to go 46 ft. up the mast to attempt to fix it.
