st4000 repair

I've replaced the belt on 4000 which did need to be replaced but has not corrected my problem. Once I engage the unit it sometimes will operate for a short period and then without warning will start into a 360 circle. Other times it will oscillate greater than the 10degrees and then go into a 360 turn. Is this a major problem or can replaceing the pad correct my problem Allen

Compass Course

This autopilot is only steering by compass course. What does the compass course do when the pilot is in STANDBY. It should display an accurate compass course and change in relation to the boats heading.

check plug

when my 4000 acted like that it turned out to be a bad conection due to a loose wire at the plug. You might want to check that, just pull on the wire's, if loose, they'll just come out.
