Hello,

I've taken an nmea 0183 port and connected it to the nmea input on the autohelm st4000 but when I try to "Track" it, it errors out and says "no data".

Has anyone had luck getting these two to play nicely together?

Thanks,
-Jared

I don't think you can interface a Raymarine product to non Raymarine equipment.

You can, but you need a Raymarine Seatalk to NMEA 0183 interface box. I did this successfully on my last boat with Raymarine autopilot and instruments, and Garmin chart plotter and radar.

Here is a post from another site that may help. It's for a Garmin 546 and ST4000. The wiring cable is close to that of the 740s.

The problem is that Garmin uses the 12 VDC ground as the signal ground. So, to get it to work with the ST4000, you need to connect the Garmin (Blue or Grey) NMEA out wire to the ST4000's RED NMEA+ in wire, and then you have to connect the ST4000's BLUE NMEA- wire to the Garmin's 12 VDC ground.

Be aware you probably need to set the Garmin's serial port to the NMEA 0183 protocol, as they are set to Garmin's proprietary protocol by default IIRC. Set the ports to NMEA 0183, 4800, 8, N, 1.

The St4000 is only accepting of Nmea0183 data and is limited to what codes it receives. Check out the ST4000 Manual for details. If you want to transmit Nmea0183 , you will need the Raymarine converter.

Good luck

IT WORKS! Thanks so much!! Just needed to change 1 wire around placing it on the garmin ground and it came alive.

Hi Jarid
I have the same setup. 740s and st4000. Could you take a moment to put in point form your hookup process? It would be a great help. Maybe a picture or 2? Thanks, Vic
