ST4000 fluxgate mounting

Bill, thanks for your recent advice. Since my VCR is not blinking 12:00 and I regularly change my own oil, Ill try the istall process myself. I did have a question about mounting the fluxgate compass. I recently spoke to one Catalina owner who indicatred many people mount it in the v-berth water tank area. This is about 8 feet from the bow. Is this too far forward? Thanks for your input. David

You want to have it as close to the center of pitch and roll as possible. This might be the best place considering the other compartments and equipment onboard. The autopilot goes through a setup procedure that will tell you if it is in a good place as far as the magnetic field is concerned. If you notice a high degree of degredation in rougher whether then you might be to far from the center of pitch and roll.
