st4000 fluxgate compass location?

I just bought an st4000 autopilot for my '86 hunter 31any ideas on placement of the f/g compass?Thank's, Steve

Under the galley sink.

Mine is under the galley sink. But make sure it is low down, nesar the center of the boat and away from metallic objects.

With the flux gate located under the sink, every time that soup can, in the sink rolls back and forth, your helm is going to respond with a heading change. There was an accident written up in Boat/US covering this very same thing a month ago.
